Killing car odours with ozone — safely
Ozone destroys smells at the molecule. It is also a lung irritant. Follow this protocol exactly.

Ozone (O₃) is an unstable form of oxygen. It reacts with odour molecules, mould spores and bacteria and breaks them down — which is why it works where air fresheners only cover up. That same reactivity is why nobody — person, pet or plant — may be inside while it runs. Done properly, it is the single most effective fix for smoke, pet and damp smells.
Ozone safety: unoccupied spaces only — no people, pets or plants. Run on a timer, keep the space closed to dwell, then air out fully before use. Ozone neutralises odours; it is not a medical treatment.
- 1
Remove the source first
Ozone is a finisher. Vacuum, remove the old car seat cover, clean the spill, dry the wet carpet. If the source is still there, the smell will come back.
- 2
Empty the car completely
No people, no pets, no plants. Remove leather jackets and anything rubber-sensitive you care about.
- 3
Set up and seal
Place the generator on the floor or rear seat. Close all windows, run the engine briefly with aircon on recirculate so the ducts are treated, then switch off.
Bay tip · Never leave a running engine unattended for this. Ozone Pro runs off its own power; Ozone Mini off the 12V socket.
- 4
Run the timer
30 minutes for typical smells, up to 60 for smoke. Walk away. Do not open the door to check.
- 5
Dwell, then air out
Leave the car closed 30 minutes after the cycle ends so the ozone reverts to oxygen. Then open all doors for at least 30 minutes before anyone gets in.
- 6
Repeat if needed
Heavy smoke may need two sessions on separate days. More time in one go is not better.
Common mistakes
- Running it with anyone inside — ever
- Skipping the source clean
- Opening the car mid-cycle
- Running daily — once is the treatment, not a routine
Ozone is harmful to breathe. Unoccupied spaces only, on a timer, with full dwell and air-out time. Keep the generator away from children. Ozone treats odours; it is not a medical treatment and makes no health claim.
